Urban Recharge: Basin

Project location: Moorpark Water Reclamation Facility

The goal of the Ventura Recharge Project was to characterize a number of dedicated recharge basins at the Moorpark Water Reclamation Facility to better understand and quantify infiltration rates in ponds with different soil types. This understanding would then provide Ventura knowledge of their recharge rates and if they can be improved through some engineering modification.

This was first accomplished by mapping the soils types distributed throughout the selected ponds. Soil cores were collected at locations of differing geophysical responses that were collected with electromagnetic induction (EI) and ERT. PVC access tubes were installed in the boreholes to later permit the collection of soil moisture readings down to 15 m (50ft) with a neutron probe.
